A

An adjustable guide bush is used to guide the workpiece and is manually set to the guide diameter using the adjusting nut.

An adjusting nut is used on adjustable guide bushes to set the guide diameter manually.

B

A bar feed collet transports raw material from the bar feeder into the machine. The material to be machined is clamped in the bar feed collet.

Blank clamping refers to the clamping of e.g. bar material in a collet. In this case, the collet may has grooves in order to achieve a higher holding force. Finished part clamping designates the clamping of components that have already been machined and must not be damaged. For this reason, the collets in this case are smooth.

D

A dead length collet is used to clamp workpieces. It is actuated by a pressure sleeve that pushes the collet axially against the cap nut.

A double cone collet is used to clamp workpieces and is used, among other applications, in the main spindle of TORNOS multi-spindle machines.

A draw tube is part of the clamping system and is installed in the spindle of a lathe. Draw-in collets are screwed into the draw tube on the machine side.

A draw-in collet is used to clamp workpieces. Clamping is achieved by pulling the draw-in collet back into the collet sleeve.

E

An ejector is used to eject components from the collet. This is actuated by the lathe and reset by a spring in the collet.

An ER collet is used in collet holders, tapping attachments or quick-change chucks and is used for tool clamping.

F

The feed rod is the holding and feed element for the material bar in the guide channel of the bar feeder.

A feeding collet guides raw material from the bar feeder into the machine. The bar material is guided and clamped by the feeding collet.

In this pressure welding process, workpieces are joined by heat and pressure. The heat is generated by friction.

G

Grinding is a method for the surface treatment. It is used to smooth surfaces and define final contours. The process can be applied manually or on grinding machines.

A guide bush is used in sliding headstock lathes to stabilise bar material during machining.

A guide bush alignment mandrel is used to check axial or radial offset of machine axes as well as run-out and wobble on the main or sub spindle.

The guide diameter is the diameter to which a guide bush is set in order to guide the bar material.

The guiding surface does not transmit any forces and only serves to bring the compenent into position in the guide bush. This can be compared with the guidance of a component in a steady rest.

Hard milling is the milling of hardened steel.

Hard turning is used to machine hard and hardened workpiece materials. The cutting edge of the tool must be harder than the steel being machined.

I

Internal cooling is used, for example, in tools with internal coolant channels through which coolant lubricant can be supplied directly to the machining point.

Lathes are machine tools used to manufacture rotationally symmetrical workpieces.

The loading of a CNC lathe can be done manually or automatically. This is done automatically, for example with a loading magazine for bar stock, and by robot for blanks or pre-materials. The finished component can be unloaded from the CNC lathe in several ways. Either by robot or by flushing into a channel. It can also be unloaded by means of an ejector, which pushes the part through the spindle bore of the sub spindle. Conduct through the sub spindle is usually done for long workpieces/parts.

The fully automated loading magazine feeds the bar material from the behind through the main spindle of a lathe with the assistance of the feed rod with the rotating insert and bar feed collet (spring-loaded clamping bush) mounted on it.

A long nose collet is used in the sub-spindle to grip the workpiece.

M

Marks are linear grooves with a rounded or flat base, which can occur when material is pushed through a guide bush. In contrast, a tear has a sharp bottom and the scratch has an irregular shape in an unspecified direction.

Bulk production involves the production of large quantities with a high level of repeatability. There are low unit costs because production is planned evenly and over a long term. The products are manufactured on, e.g. different productions lines in one batch which requires a lot of preparation work.

A material pusher with rotating insert and bar feed collet transports the material into the machine for machining.

As the name suggests, a multi-spindle machine has several main spindles. The material is automatically fed into the machine by the bar feeder.

A multi-spindle collet is a collet for multi-spindle machines and is used to clamp workpieces in the main spindle or sub-spindle.

The nominal diameter defines the size of a component, namely its outside or inside diameter.

P

A pick-up collet is used on the sub-spindle to pick up or grip workpieces.

Widen is generally understood as the pre-opening of the collet to a certain dimension with the aid of heat treatment. This serves to ensure that the collet opens by itself when it is removed from the clamp. Only in this way can a component or raw material be inserted.

A pressure sleeve is an important component of the clamping system and is installed in the spindle of a CNC lathe.

A programmable guide bush is designed for INDEX/TRAUB machines; the bar or guide diameter is set via the machine control.

A bar feed collet is located at the slider head of a push rod, which is slid over the end of the rod so that the remaining piece of the rod can later be pulled out to the rear.

R

A reducing tube adapts the spindle bore of a CNC lathe to the material diameter.

The workpiece is clamped in a rotary table on this machine tool. In addition, the rotary transfer has the option of running several processes in parallel.

A rotating insert accommodates the rotational movement of the raw material while the material to be machined is clamped in the bar feed collet.

Fixed-headstock lathes are also referred to as fixed-headstock automatic lathes or CNC lathes. The special feature is that only the Z axis of the machine moves during longitudinal turning.

The aim of vulcanization is to seal the slots between the clamping segments. This prevents the entry of machining chips into the collet. A resealing is possible.

Semi-finished parts are prefabricated products made from raw material that are further processed into the final product by various manufacturing or forming processes.

This production method is used for small quantities of fewer than 20 units per month and a low repetition frequency.

In the sliding headstock lathe, the material is pushed through the guide bush by the z-movement of the main spindle. The machine was developed for small and complex precision parts and long workpieces.

Surfaces with sliding properties develop less friction, abrasion and bond. No additional lubricants are required and the service life is significantly extended.

The slot is an elongated, angular recess on a surface that is used to fixing, guide or countersink components. For collets with special as well as square and hexagon shapes, a slot can be added to lock the collet in the machine.

In a lathe, the spindle is used to transmit a rotary motion to the workpiece. A distinction is made between the main spindle and sub spindle. The main spindle holds the round material, profile material or a blank and will drive it for the turning process. The sub spindle is located opposite the main spindle and allows complete machining of a workpiece.

The spindle insert tube is a reducing tube for the main spindle on the headstock of a CNC lathe. A spindle insert tube is used when the material bar or the feed rod is smaller in diameter than the inner diameter of the spindle. This ensures optimum guidance and serves to adapt to the guide channel of the loading magazine or to the material bar on the short bar feeder.

Several individual spring leaves stacked on top of one another, i.e. the two opposing springs, generally form a spring pack.

A synchronous collet is a collet specifically available for INDEX/TRAUB automatic lathes.

The synchronous rod moves the feed rod towards the machine working area.

Wear means the deterioration and progressive loss of material of a solid body due to mechanical wear. It can change the geometry of components and thus impair the function. The consequence could be component damage. Wear resistance is the resistance of a solid body to mechanical abrasion. Surfaces can be specially hardened or coated for optimization.

Workpiece guidance means guiding the workpiece or bar material during machining, for example by means of a guide bush.
